The methane fermentations of acetate and methanol.

چکیده
the superscripts denoting separate isotopic labels. Since Pine and Barker (1956) established that the methyl group of acetate is transferred intact during its incorporation into methane, we wished to determine whether methanol could be metabolized analogously. The deuterium incorporation procedure previously employed for the study of the acetate fermentation was used to establish that all three hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon of methanol remained attached during methane formation. In addition, we have investigated the relationship between methanol and acetate utilization, and discuss a possible common intermediary pathway.

Constancy of glucose and starch fermentations by two different human faecal microbial communities.
The fermentation of glucose and corn starch by faecal suspensions from two subjects was examined over a three and a half year period. The substrate specificity and products of the faecal fermentations of each subject were relatively stable during this period and were significantly different between subjects. The major soluble end products of fermentation of glucose or starch were acetate, propi...
متن کاملMetabolism of acetate, methanol, and methylated amines in intertidal sediments of lowes cove, maine.
The fates and the rates of metabolism of acetate, trimethylamine, methylamine, and methanol were examined to determine the significance of these compounds as in situ methane precursors in surface sediments of an intertidal zone in Maine. Concentrations of these potential methane precursors were generally <3 muM, with the exception of sediments containing fragments of the seaweed Ascophyllum nod...
متن کاملLoss of the mtr operon in Methanosarcina blocks growth on methanol, but not methanogenesis, and reveals an unknown methanogenic pathway.
In the methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina barkeri Fusaro, the N5-methyl-tetrahydrosarcinapterin (CH3-H4SPT):coenzyme M (CoM) methyltransferase, encoded by the mtr operon, catalyzes the energy-conserving (sodium-pumping) methyl transfer from CH3-H4SPT to CoM during growth on H2/CO2 or acetate. However, in the disproportionation of C-1 compounds, such as methanol, to methane and carbon dioxide,...
متن کاملFlux balance analysis indicates that methane is the lowest cost feedstock for microbial cell factories
The low cost of natural gas has driven significant interest in using C1 carbon sources (e.g. methane, methanol, CO, syngas) as feedstocks for producing liquid transportation fuels and commodity chemicals. Given the large contribution of sugar and lignocellulosic feedstocks to biorefinery operating costs, natural gas and other C1 sources may provide an economic advantage. To assess the relative ...
متن کاملStable acetate production in extreme-thermophilic (70°C) mixed culture fermentation by selective enrichment of hydrogenotrophic methanogens
The control of metabolite production is difficult in mixed culture fermentation. This is particularly related to hydrogen inhibition. In this work, hydrogenotrophic methanogens were selectively enriched to reduce the hydrogen partial pressure and to realize efficient acetate production in extreme-thermophilic (70°C) mixed culture fermentation. The continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was stab...
